2 monate in südindien ... ein rückblick / 2 months in south india ... a review

die anzahl der posts in den letzten wochen hat wahrscheinlich schon vermuten lassen, dass ich nun meine reise in meine innere welt gestartet habe ... und da gibt es noch nicht die geeignete kamera ... eh besser!
wenn ich also meinen blick eher nach innen gerichtet hatte, so ist mir im aussen doch einiges aufgefallen!

seeing the number of posts of the last weeks one might expected that i´ve started my travel through my inner world ... and therefore there´s no appropriate camera ... and that´s ok!
although i was watching my inner process there were some things which caught my eyes!

KERALA heißt "land der kokospalmen" und das zurecht ... und im schatten der palmen leben die menschen in ihren hüttchen ... kerala ist der am dichtesten besiedelte bundesstaat indiens (844 einwohner pro qkm)
reis, kokosnüsse, tee, kaffee, cashewnüsse, diverse gewürze und fische sind die wichtigsten einnahmequellen, aber auch tourismus ist ein boomender wirtschaftszweig - vor allem entlang der küste.
kerala hat die niedrigste analphabetenrate indiens (männer 6%, frauen 12%), leider allerdings die höchste arbeitslosenrate - viele gut ausgebildete keralesen arbeiten in den golfstaaten!

KERALA means "land of coconut trees" and rightly so ... in the shade of the palm trees there live the people in their shanties ... kerala is the densest populated state of india (844 inhabitants per sqkm)
rice, coconuts, tea, coffe, cashew nuts, a range of spices and fish are the most important source of income, tourism is a booming economic sector, too - in particular along the coast line.
kerala has less iliterates of whole india but the highest unemployment rate - many well educated keralese work in the golf states!

if you´re a man of taste you´re having a mustache ...


... und trägst anstatt hosen einen lungi (vergleichbar mit einem sarong!) ... zumindest hier in südindien!

... and you´re wearing a lungi (comparable with a sarong!) ... at least here in the south of india!

familie hat einen sehr hohen stellenwert ... das rollenbild ist noch immer sehr traditionell, das gesellschaftsleben wird nach wie vor von männern dominiert.

family has a high importance ... the role models are still very traditional, the social life is dominated by men.

die inder sind sehr gläubig ... und der hinduismus ist eine faszinierende religion ... unzählige gottheiten, unzählige tempelfeste, unzählige rituale!

the indians are very religious ... and the hinduism is a fascinating religion ... with countless deities, countless temple festivals and countless rituals!

indien versinkt im müll ... inmitten des mülls suchen tiere und menschen nach essbarem!
hier wird einem bewusst, in welch organisiertem paradies wir leben ... denn, ehrlich, auch hierzulande wird allerhand einfach so weggeworfen ... aber es gibt strassenkehrer, es gibt eine müllabfuhr, ...

india is boging in garbage ... and inmidst all this waste animals and people are looking for eatables!
here you become aware in which organized paradise we´re living ... cause let´s face it, over here there´s a lot which is trashed (empty-headed!) ... but there are street cleaners, there´s a garbage removal, ...

die strände sind wild romantisch, das meer mehr wild als romantisch! und leider ... ausgenommen die hoteleigenen strände ... gleichen die strände oft eher mülldponien! es ist wirklich so schade!

the beaches are picturesque, but the sea is quite wild! und unfortunately ... except the beaches of the hotels ... many beaches resemble waste deposits! it´s such a pity!

wer eine richtige ayurveda (reinigungs)kur, also pancha karma, machen möchte ... ich denke, 3 wochen ist optimal ... dem kann ich gopis sm-studio (homepage ist gerade in arbeit: www.ayurvedasanjeevani.com) wärmstens empfehlen! es ist allerdings kein wellness-urlaub, sondern eine reinigung von körper, geist und seele ... mit langzeiteffekt!

whoever is deciding for an authentic ayurveda (cleansing) treatment, a socalled pancha karma ... in my opinion 3 weeks are ideal ... my recommendation is gopi´s sm-studio (his homepage is in progress: www.ayurvedasanjeevani.com)! but don´t forget - this is not a wellness-holiday, it´s a purification of body, mind and soul ... with a time dependent effect!

ein ashram ist der perfekte ort, sich selbst ein wenig besser kennen zu lernen ... was nicht immer nur angenehm ist!
wer auch immer einen indien-urlaub plant, sollte ein paar tage in einen ashram versuchen!

an ashram is the perfect place to get to know yourself a little bit better ... which not always is that comfortable!
whoever plans to go to india should stay for some days at an ashram!

mumbai (bombay)

ich bin total positiv überrascht! nach den ruhigen tagen im ashram in die größte stadt indiens zu fahren - dachte ich, ist eine herausforderung ... aber es kommt ja immer anders, als man denkt! mir gefällt es hier sehr gut, auf schritt und tritt begleiten einen die herrschaftlichen gebäude aus der britischen kolonialzeit ...


i´m totally surprised! to go to the biggest city of india after these quiet days at the ashram - i thought that might be a challenge ... but things make an unexpected course! i like the places i saw, at every turn there is appearing a manorial building of the british colonial times...

ja, geld hat damals keine rolle gespielt!

at those time money was irrelevant!







und durch die ernennung zum weltkulturerbe hatte man auch genügend geld, diese wunderschönen gebäude zu renovieren und in ihrem ursprünglichen glanz erstrahlen zu lassen!

and regarding to the appointment as world heritage there was enough money for renovating these beautiful buildings so that they´re glistening in their original splendor!

BOMBAY UNIVERSITY






VICTORIA bahnhof - seit 2004 UNESCO weltkulturerbe ... ein wirklich beachtlicher bau, eine bunte mischung aus viktorianischem, hinduistischen und islamischen stile-elementen!

VICTORIA terminus-since 2004 UNESCO world heritage ... a monumental building, a colorful mixture of victorian, hindu and islamic styles!

ein ziegel und ein seil ... und phantasie ... in unseren breitengraden wird die kreativität durch geld "ersetzt" ... dementsprechend sehen die spielzeuge (und die art des spielens) ein wenig anders aus ...

a brick and a rope ... and creativity ... in our countries creativity is "replaced" by money ... according to this the toys (and the kind of playing) look different ...

wo ist es wahrscheinlich am "kühlsten"? bingo - ich mache eine bootsfahrt zur ELEPHANTA insel!

where is probably the "coolest" spot? bingo - i´m going by boat to the ELEPHANTA island!


soweit das auge reicht ... bombay hat 20 millionen einwohner ... das muss man sich mal als "mini-österreicher" auf der zunge zergehen lassen!

as far as you can see ... bombay has 20 million inhabitants ... being a "mini-austrian" you´ve to savour that fact!


+ in mumbai gibt es ca. 50.000 schwarze taxis - daneben gibt es noch verschiedenste andere private taxi-unternehmen
+ ca. 2,5 millionen menschen passieren täglich den victoria bahnhof
+ ca. 55% lebt in slums (in denen aber fleissigst gearbeitet wird ... ca. 600 mio usd werden hier jährlich erwirtschaftet!)
trotz allem ist das tägliche einkommen mit usd 3,-- noch immer sehr niedrig - im vergleich zu westlichen industrienationen ... im vergleich zum rest indiens 3x so hoch ... ja, ihr lest richtig, das tägliche durchschnittseinkommen indiens ist usd 1,--

+ there are 50.000 black taxis in mumbai - besides those there are several private taxi-businesses
+ 2,5 million people are passing the victoria terminus a day
+ 55% of mumbai´s population is living in slums (but they´re busy workers ... approximately 600 mio usd are generated every year!) although the daily average income of usd 3,-- is very low compared with western industrialized countries ... compared with the rest of india it´s three times national average ... yeah, that´s no mistake, india´s daily average income is usd 1,--

die affen sind mehr als gefräßig und super agressiv ... ich habe mir einen snack gekauft und musste flüchten, denn ansonsten hätte ich meine jause - im besten fall - teilen müssen!

the monkeys are extremely greedy and aggressive ... i bought a snack and had to flie, otherwise i would have had to share my snack - at best!

elephanta island ist berühmt für seine in den fels gehauene tempel ...

elephanta island is famous for its cave temples ...


dieser haupttempel is shiva geweiht ... wahrscheinlich zwischen 450 und 750 ad geschaffen ... die portugiesen haben leider sehr viel zerstört, erst spätere delegationen haben den wert dieser tempel erkannt und sie vor weiteren zerstörungen geschützt!

the main temple is dedicated to shiva ... probably created between 450 and 750 ad ... unfortunately the portuguese destroyed many sculptures, delegations which arrived later on recognized the value of these temples and protected them against further destructions!

ashram life

prassat bringt mich nach neyyar dam und wir machen noch kurz halt, um ein tempelfest zu besuchen ... hier wird gerade reis gekocht!

prassat is taking me to neyyar dam - we stop for a visit of a temple festival ... here the women are cooking rice!

das ist mein "zimmer" für die nächsten 18 tage!

this is my "room" for the next 18 days!






vor meinem fenster baumeln jackfrüchte ... die sind ausgesprochen köstlich!

in front of my window there the jack fruits are dangling ... they´re sooo delicious!


die nachwirkungen der pancha karma kur haben sich nun mein gesicht auserkoren ... ich habe ja gehört, dass dies eine verjüngungskur sein soll ... gut, ich habe mir das dann doch ein wenig anders vorgestellt!

you can see the aftereffects of the pancha karma treatments on my face ... i heard that this should be a rejuvenating treatment ... okay, my expectations were a little bit different!

ashram (sanskrit) heißt "ort der anstrengung" ... wie wahr! ich sage euch, da war ja gopis sm-studio noch harmlos!
also ... jeden morgen um 5:20 läutet die glocke, um 6:00 startet das morgenprogramm mit einer halben stunde meditation, dann werden heilige texte gesungen, dann wird aus einem buch des "obergurus sivananda" vorgelesen. um 7:30 gibt es tee, von 8:00 bis 10:00 yoga (-verrenkungen), dann (endlich) frühstück (brunch), danach muss ein jeder im ashram mithelfen (toiletten reinigen, boden wischen, ...), um 13:30 gibt es tee, von 14:00 bis 15:00 gibt es "unterricht" (spirituelle themen - alles rund um yoga!), von 15:30 bis 17:30 weitere 2 stunden yoga, um 18:00 abendessen und um 20:00 meditation und singen ... und danach falle ich halbtot ins bett!

ashram (sanskrit) means "place of austerity" ... how true! i can tell you compared with the life at the ashram gopi´s sm-studio was harmless!
very well then ... each morning the bell is ringing at 5:20, at 6:00 we start with the morning program - meditation and chanting, then there´s a reading of a book of the guru sivananda. at 7:30 it´s tea time and from 8:00 to 10:00 we have yoga exercises (or better called acrobatics), then (finally) breakfast (brunch), afterwards we have to help in the ashram (cleaning the toilets, sweeping the floors,...), at 13:30 we have tea, from 14:00 to 15:00 we have a "lecture" (spiritual topics, relating to yoga!), from 15:30 to 17:30 two more hours of yoga, at 18:00 dinner and at 20:00 meditation and chanting ... and then i fall into my bed - totally exhausted!

der ashram liegt an einem stausee, umrundet von bergen, es ist ein idyllisches plätzchen!

the ashram is situated at a dam, surrounded by mountains, it´s an idyllic place!


da kann ich mich von den strapazen des ashram-alltags ein wenig erholen!

here i´m recovering from the stresses and strains of the ashram life!


das ist george aus kenya ... er ist volunteer und hat vor, 1 jahr im ashram zu bleiben ... na, gratuliere!

this is george from kenya ... he´s a volunteer and is ging to stay for 1 year at the ashram ... my congratulations!

wandermönche ... sie ziehen von ashram zu ashram, wo sie für maximal 3 tage gratis unterkunft und verpflegung erhalten!

wandering monchs ... they´re moving from ashram to ashram where they get free accomodation and food!


bananen-blüten ... all diese köstlichkeiten der tropen, ich werde sie vermissen!

diese jungs sind absolute spitze - ich bin (in voller bekleidung!) schwimmen gewesen und habe total vergessen, dass ich meine sonnenbrille am kopf habe ... und kurz darauf hatte ...
das wasser ist allerdings nicht klar genug, um auf den grund zu sehen ... aber die jungs sind auf die suche gegangen (besser gesagt getaucht!) ... und haben sie gefunden - einer macht hier auf bollywood star ... mit meiner brille!

the water isn´t clear enough to see down to the ground ... but the guys dived ... and found my glasses - one of them is imitating a bollywood star ... with my glasses!

ich bin müde - ich gönne mir noch ein paar minuten bettruhe ...

zur zeit sind 80 kinder im ashram und jedes wochenende ist "talente-show"!

currently there are 80 kids at the ashram and every weekend they have a talent show!


sonntag morgens brechen wir bereits um 5:30 auf, um auf einen berg zu marschieren bei sonnenaufgang zu meditieren ...

sunday morning we´re starting at 5:30 in the morning to climb up a mountain and meditate at sun rise ...


es ist ein aussergewöhnliches erlebnis ...

it´s an extraordinary experience ...

unser chanting wird jedoch lautstark von gesängen aus der naheliegenden kirche übertönt - lautsprecher sind überall und nirgends angebracht ... und sie tönen von morgens bis abends!

sonnenaufgang am see ... es ist wert, frühmorgens aufzustehen!

in ermangelung einer küche oder badezimmers wird im see so gut wie alles gewaschen!

in the absence of a kitchen or a bathroom everything is cleaned at the lake!
